ABSTRACT

The Saint Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is an encephalitogenic arbovirus (Flaviviridae family) that has a wide geographical distribution in the western hemisphere, especially in the Americas. The negevirus Brejeira (BREV) was isolated for the first time in Brazil in 2005. This study aimed to verify the existence of a possible interfering effect of BREV on the course of SLEV infection and vice versa. We used clone C6/36 cells. Three combinations of MOIs were used (SLEV 0.1 × BREV 1; SLEV 1 × BREV 0.1; SLEV 1 × BREV 1) in the kinetics of up to 7 days and then the techniques of indirect immunofluorescence (IFA), a plaque assay on Vero cells, and RT-PCR were performed. Our results showed that the cytopathic effect (CPE) caused by BREV was more pronounced than the CPE caused by SLEV. Results of IFA, the plaque assay, and RT-PCR showed the suppression of SLEV replication in the co-infection condition in all the MOI combinations used. The SLEV suppression was dose-dependent. Therefore, the ISV Brejeira can suppress SLEV replication in Aedes albopictus cells, but SLEV does not negatively interfere with BREV replication.

ABSTRACT

This ecological study assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on completed treatments (CTs) and referrals during urgent dental visits to primary health care units in Brazil, and their associations with socioeconomic, geodemographic, and pandemic index factors in Brazilian municipalities. The difference in rates of procedures 12 months before and during the pandemic was calculated. Data were extracted at baseline from health information systems of all municipalities that provided urgent dental care (n = 5,229 out of 5,570). Multiple logistic regression predicted the factors associated with referrals and CTs. The number of dental urgencies increased from 3,987.9 to 4,272.4 per 100,000 inhabitants. The rates of referrals decreased in 44.1% of the municipalities, while 53.9% had lower rates of CTs. Municipalities with a greater number of oral health teams in the primary health care system (OR = 1.52, 95%CI:1.21-1.91) and with specialized services (OR = 1.80, 95%CI:1.50-2.16) were more likely to decrease referrals during the pandemic. Higher HDI and GDP per capita were associated with a larger decrease in referrals and smaller decrease in CTs. The calamity generated by the long pandemic period resulted in a greater demand for urgent visits. Less developed and larger cities seem to have been more likely to not complete treatments during urgent visits in primary dental care units in times of calamity. Primary dental care offices in smaller and less developed municipalities should be better equipped to provide appropriate assistance and to improve the problem-solving capacity of dental services during emergencies.

ABSTRACT

This ecological study described the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and socioeconomic development on the use and profile of urgent dental care (UDC). UDC rates per 100,000 inhabitants before (from March to June 2019) and during (from March to June 2020) the COVID-19 pandemic in 4,062 Brazilian municipalities were compared. Data were collected from official sources. COVID-19 mortality and hospitalization rates were indicative of levels of lockdown and Human Development Index (HDI) indicated socioeconomic development. Multiple logistic regression and relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) were used for statistical analyses. The Student t-test was used to compare changes in the profile of UDC causes and procedures in the two periods. Lower UDC rates were found in 69.1% of municipalities and were associated with higher HDI (OR = 1.20; 95%CI: 1.01; 1.42). Mortality had OR = 0.88 (95%CI: 0.73; 1.06) for municipalities with HDI < 0.70 and OR = 1.45 (95%CI: 1.07; 1.97) for municipalities with HDI > 0.70. RERI between HDI and COVID-19 was 0.13 (p < 0.05). Municipalities with greater primary health care coverage had a smaller reduction in emergency rates. Endodontic treatment and dental pain were the most frequent factors both before and during the pandemic. The percentage of UDCs due to pain and soft tissue damage, as well as temporary sealing and surgical procedures, increased. Socioeconomic variables affected UDC rates during the most restrictive period of the COVID-19 pandemic and should be considered in the planning of health actions in future emergencies.

ABSTRACT

The main goal of the present work was to evaluate the application of ultrasound as a previous step to promote the substrates pre-emulsion in the hydrolysis reaction of macauba kernel oil (MKO). The ultrasound effect on the substrates pre-emulsion was evaluated on the free fatty acid (FFA) content, as well as the process variables (reaction time, percentage of catalyst Lipozyme® RM IM, and buffer solution). Reactions carried out with the substrates pre-emulsion presented higher FFA production, up to a 40 wt% increase in 1 hour of reaction, yielding 80 wt% of FFAs in 8 hours. The use of catalyst in the reaction medium, from 5 to 15 wt%, favored the FFAs production in 2 hours of reaction. Addition of 25 to 100 wt% of buffer solution led to 86 wt% of FFAs in 4 hours of reaction. Enzyme recycling resulted in a slight decrease in the FFA content, although the catalyst had maintained 85% of its initial activity after 30 h of use. Therefore, the ultrasound pre-emulsion previous step allowed a more efficient hydrolysis reaction of MKO, leading to an increase of up to 40 wt% on the FFA content, when compared to the hydrolysis without such step.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/AIM: The degree of intrusion is an important aspect to be evaluated when treating children following intrusive luxation. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate re-eruption rates and the occurrence of sequelae in intruded primary teeth according to the degree of intrusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 238 teeth from 168 patients diagnosed with and treated for intrusion over a 16-year period at a specialized trauma center in South Brazil were included in this study. Patient details, including demographic characteristics, tooth affected, presence of sequelae of trauma during the follow up (pulp necrosis and infection, crown discoloration and abnormal mobility), and any effects on the permanent successors, were collected from their records. Photographs were analyzed to determine the degree of intrusion (Grade I, II, or III) and spontaneous re-eruption during follow up. Re-eruption and occurrence of sequelae according to the degree of intrusion were evaluated using the chi-squared test. The level of significance was set at 5%. RESULTS: Most teeth were maxillary central incisors (87.8%) with Grade I intrusion (32.8%). In the first 30 days, 13.1% had signs of re-eruption. After 3-6 months, the frequency of re-eruption increased to 58.7%. Of the teeth evaluated 6 months or more after intrusion, 68% had re-erupted. Total intrusion (Grade III) was associated with pulp necrosis and infection (p = .002), but the degree of intrusion was not associated with the presence of crown discoloration or abnormal mobility. Of the 78 permanent successors evaluated, 52.6% had developmental disturbances. CONCLUSION: Most intruded primary teeth re-erupted spontaneously, and the degree of intrusion was associated with a worse prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Aedes aegypti is a mosquito vector of arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, zika and yellow fever that cause important public health diseases. The incidence and gravity of these diseases justifies the search for effective measures to reduce the presence of this vector in the environment. Bioinsecticides are an effective alternative method for insect control, with added ecological benefits such as biodegradability. The current study demonstrates that a chitinolytic enzyme complex produced by the fungus Trichoderma asperellum can disrupt cuticle formation in the L3 larvae phase of A. aegypti, suggesting such biolarvicidal action could be used for mosquito control. T. asperellum was exposed to chitin from different sources. This induction of cell wall degrading enzymes, including chitinase, N-acetylglucosaminidase and ß-1,3-glucanase. Groups of 20 L3 larvae of A. aegypti were exposed to varying concentrations of chitinolytic enzymes induced with commercial chitin (CWDE) and larvae cell wall degrading enzymes (L-CWDE). After 72 h of exposure to the CWDE, 100% of larvae were killed. The same percent mortality was observed after 48 h of exposure to L-CWDE at half the CWDE enzyme mixture concentration. Exoskeleton deterioration was further observed by scanning and electron microscopy. Our findings indicate that L-CWDE produced by T. asperellum reflect chitinolytic enzymes with greater specificity for L3 larval biomolecules. This specificity is characterized by the high percentage of mortality compared with CWDE treatments and also by abrupt changes in patterns of the cellular structures visualized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. These mixtures of chitinolytic enzymes could be candidates, as adjuvant or synergistic molecules, to replace conventional chemical insecticides currently in use.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To assess whether hospitalization and feeding strategy impact the risk of hypozincemia and associated risk factors. METHODS: In this case-control study, serum zinc levels were compared between inpatients fed oral nutrition (ON) (n = 76) or enteral nutrition (EN) (n = 191) with outpatient controls (n = 1095). FINDINGS: Zinc levels were significantly lower in inpatients receiving EN compared with those receiving ON (P = 0.001). Significant (P < 0.001) ß-values of -11.16 and -17.58 for serum zinc concentrations were found for inpatients receiving ON or EN, respectively, compared with the outpatients. Hospitalization and old age were both independent predictors of zinc deficiency. More than 75% of patients >60 years of age fed EN had a zinc concentration <68.75 µg/dL. Low hemoglobin levels increased the risk of low zinc levels for inpatients receiving EN (P = 0.003) and ON (P = 0.026). Age (P < 0.001), noninvasive mechanical ventilatory support (P = 0.016), and critical care (P = 0.018) were risk factors for hypozincemia in patients receiving ON. Low iron levels were associated with hypozincemia (P = 0.001) in patients receiving EN. IMPLICATIONS: Hospitalization and being >60 years of age were risk factors for zinc deficiency. Intensive care and noninvasive mechanical ventilatory support were risk factors for hypozincemia in hospitalized patients who were fed orally. Low hemoglobin levels increased the risk of low zinc concentrations for inpatients receiving EN and ON, and low iron levels were associated with hypozincemia only after EN.

ABSTRACT

The information was organized in two categories defined a priori, based on the objectives of the study: SIMH used by specific groups and implications of the results of the studies analyzed in practice. We verified that the Internet and the health professional(s) were the most favored SIMH of the different samples analyzed. However, it is necessary for practitioners to point out reliable SIMH for patients and to explain possible limitations of each of these. We concluded that, although the Internet has increased access to mental health information, the role of professionals remains crucial in the production of reliable content.

ABSTRACT

The present work aimed to develop and characterize HPMC-films (HFs) based on hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) with the addition of lactase for later application in the reduction of lactose in whole milk. The HFs were produced by the casting technique, with the addition of 1, 3, 5 and 7 g of lactase per 100 g of filmogenic solution. All the formulations presented a high capacity of film formation, but the thickness and time of disintegration increased according to the added lactase concentration. Regardless of the formulation developed, HFs in whole milk, a reduction in the lactose content (~ 80%) occurred, classifying the product as zero lactose. Thus, the HPMC-films with the addition of lactase can be considered as a good alternative for solubilization in foods which have a high concentration of lactose.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION Some studies show an association between the evolution of the prevalence of non-communicable chronic diseases with eating patterns and nutritional situation of the population. The purpose of this research was to describe fruit and vegetable consumption in Argentina and its association with socio-economic, demographic and physical activity factors at individual, provincial and regional levels. METHODS A multilevel model approach was used, with information provided in the Argentina National Survey of Risk Factors (2013) and National Census of Population (200! and 2010). RESULTS The model showed a positive association between fruit and vegetable consumption and being female, being older, having a monthly income over the ARS $450! threshold and having finished secondary school. In contrast, being separated, divorced, widowed or single, and practicing moderate or low physical activity were negatively associated with the intake of fruits and vegetables. The effect of the variability at provincial and regional level turned out to be minimal. CONCLUSIONS This work is part of a series of studies that link factors related to healthy eating with social and physical environments, mainly with socioeconomic characteristics of the peer group and its context. In this sense, it would be important to provide more disaggregated information.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Introduction: In recent years, the quality of life of medical students has been questioned, given the context in which they are inserted. Stress as a result of the number of long hours, difficulty in reconciling academic and personal life, exposure to situations of pain and suffering, have been shown to be the main factors for the decrease in quality of life of these students. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life of medical students and its associated factors. Method: Cross-sectional study with 419 medical students from a public institution in Goiás. The study was carried out with students over 18 years old and enrolled in the second to the eighth semester of medical school, between 2017 and 2018. Sociodemographic and lifestyle questionnaires and the World Health Organization Questionnaire for Quality of Life - Brief Form (WHOQOL-BREF) were used. Results: The factors related to low quality of life were: female gender, the use of stimulants, thinking about giving up medical school and having comorbidities. Those related to a better quality of life were consuming fruits and vegetables, practicing physical activity, more sleeping time and stress management. Conclusion: This study found a set of factors capable of interfering with the quality of life of these students, suggesting the need for interventions aimed at pedagogical and psychological support.

Utilizaram-se os questionários sociodemográfico e de hábitos de vida e o World Health Organization Questionnaire for Quality of Life - Brief Form (WHOQOL-bref).

ABSTRACT

Introduction: adolescents' health and nutritional status is demonstrated in the quality of their growth and development. Bone age (BA) is the skeletal development index, which reflects an individual's maturation and is considered as the best expression of human development. Poor nutritional conditions, which extend for long periods, may influence bone development, causing a delay in BA, in relation to chronological age (CA). The aim of this study is evaluating the relation between adolescents' body mass index and bone age. Methods: cross-sectional study carried out with 172 adolescents. The variables evaluated were body mass index (BMI), CA, BA and maturational stage. The BA was determined by taking digital carpal radiographs. Results: the majority of the adolescents presented an adequate nutritional state (73.9%), 42.5% were classified as initial pubertal, followed by 40.6% as in peak height velocity (PHV), with a difference between the sexes (p < 0.001). PHV adolescents presented higher BA averages in both sexes (p = 0.005). There was a correlation between BMI and BA, with a strong correlation for girls in the pre-pubertal stage (r = 0.998; p < 0.05) and moderate correlation for those in PHV (r = 0.421; p < 0.001). By analyzing the relation of the variables to predict adolescents' BA, it was observed that the CA model, maturational stage and BMI explained the variability noted in BA in up to 50.3%. Conclusion: BMI has a relation with BA. It should be noted that BA is influenced by CA, the maturational stage and BMI

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the larvicidal activity of Pterodon polygalaeflorus oil extract against the mosquito vector Aedes aegypti. For this, crushed P. polygalaeflorus fruit underwent solvent extraction to obtain the oil extract. The chemical characterization was performed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. For the bioassays third instar larvae of Ae. aegypti were utilized. Tests were carried out to determine the larvicidal activity and the residual effect under laboratory conditions, as well as field screening (small scale). The major components of P. polygalaeflorus oil extract were, respectively, E-caryophyllene, germacrene D and bicyclogermacrene. Lethal concentrations of 50% and 90% were 36.5 and 64.8 ?g/mL respectively. The solution presented a residual effect for seven days and the efficiency of the product was preserved under field conditions. The results encourage continuing studies with the oil extract of P. polygalaeflorus as a research target for bioinsecticides.
